This book profoundly changed how I think about application performance and data. It describes so much about different kinds databases and query languages, that now I feel like I've got a big picture view of the whole industry.
IMO a better approach would be to read Designing Data Intensive Applications (mentioned a million times on HN) which is more like a high-level map of the field. The references in DDIA are also a goldmine of information.
I like when a book teaches me a lot, but also makes me realize how much more there is that I don't know, and this book did that for sure.
Not having Kleppmann’s seminal Designing Data-Intensive Applications (2017) on it would indicate no.
Designing data intensive applications by Martin Klepmann. The best engineering design book I’ve read in my 20 yrs of experience.
For something deeply technical, like Designing Data Intensive Applications, I'm not reading it to understand the specifics of the solution. I'm reading it to understand the broad strokes of problems varies solutions solve.
